孔子学院的发展遇到了很多困难和挑战。目前尚未消除的"中国威胁论"因孔子学院在中国国家形象和软实力方面的影响力增强而再次引起关注,这对孔子学院吸引学员、进一步发展都有极大的阻碍。从内部建设来说,孔子学院迅猛的发展速度产生了一系列自身建设不足的问题,如教师和教材的严重缺失,品牌形象模糊,缺乏可持续发展动力等等。

There are many difficulties and challenges confronting the development of Confucian Institute. At present there is a gossip of ＂China threat＂ and a fear of soft Chinese power of Confucian Institute. As a consequence, the enrolment and expansion of Confucian Institute are negatively affected. Internally, a lack of qualified teachers and textbooks, the vague image of the brand, and a shortage of sustainable development force are held accountable.
