A Contrastive Study of Three English Thesauruses

《罗氏英语分类词典》《朗文多功能分类词典》和《朗文联想活用词典》是英语类义词典在不同时期的代表之作。从编纂理据、词典体例、词典编纂技术和词典介质四个方面对三本词典进行对比研究,不仅能发现三者各自的特色,还可以总结和归纳出英语类义词典编纂在发展创新中的一些共同趋势,对汉语类义词典乃至汉、英双语类义词典的编纂具有理论和实践的双重参考价值。

Roget’s Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases, Longman Lexicon of Contemporary English and Longman Language Activator are commonly taken as representative of English thesauruses. Through a contrastive study of these three English thesauruses, it can be found that they have gone through changes and made innovations in the following four aspects： compilation rationale, dictionary structure, dictionary compilation technology and media of dictionary. They have their own distinguishing features and at the same time they share something in common in the development tendency. The study is of great value for the com-pilation of Chinese or bilingual thesauruses both in theory and practice.
