On the Strategies of Interpreting Chinese Idioms into English

本文以2014年两会李克强记者会现场口译为例,分析归纳了译员采用的熟语口译策略,并就其中三种进行详细讨论,认为选择口译策略应根据不同熟语类别区分对待,既准确达意,又省时省力,同时应兼顾语体的一致性。

Taking Li Keqiang＇ s Press Conference during the NPC and CPPCC sessions in 2014 as study subject, this article analyzes different cases of idiom interpretation, identifies several strategies appropriate for interpreting Chinese idioms into English and discusses three of them in detail. It argues that in choosing interpreting strategies, the differences that exist between different idiom types should be well taken into consideration so that the accurate meaning can be conveyed and the uniformity of language formality can be maintained on the basis of impromptu interpreting.
