以杜少卿为代表的真儒士是封建主流文化下的"流浪汉",他们离经叛道,游离于正统之外,以其不被世人接受的"雅趣"在充斥"俗习"的社会中踽踽独行。从更深层次来看,吴敬梓乃是当世社会最大的"流浪汉",不仅仅杜少卿是其"自况",庄绍光、虞育德、市井五奇人均或多或少地体现着作者的思想和行为特征;吴敬梓始终将自己置于幕后,但小说中又处处有他的身影,小说人物的雅趣,便也是作者未言明的雅趣。
