In Brown Girl, Brownstones, Paule Marshall describes the various types of racial discrimination and economic op- pression the Barbadian immigrants suffered in New York during the Great Depression and the Second World War, explores the living crises of Barbadian immigrants and their offspring, and unveils their self-abasement, psychic anxiety and other types of psychological changes. The sense of the immigrants' self-abasement ready for a hasty change of their conditions motivates them to struggle for the reconstruction of their identity. The characters in the novel have not been trapped in their self-abasement, but stand up for their rights and dignity bravely. The various types of anxiety suffered by the Barbadian immigrants in New York are not only their personal experiences, but the true reflection of the living dilemma and mental states of all the immi- grants in America.
