English Pronunciation Instruction and Research: A Sociopolitical Perspective

摘要 国内英语语音教学研究以本族语为原则,以学生习得本族语语音为目标,仅关注语音自然属性,忽略语音社会属性。针对语音教学应以可理解性为原则还是以本族语为原则、英语归属世界还是英美、口音是否具有社会政治属性、教学中应采取英语作为国际语言语音还是所谓标准英语语音、本族语教师教授语音还是非本族语教授语音等问题,文章从社会政治视角出发,认为语音教学中应用可理解原则取代本族语原则,侧重英语作为国际语言中可理解核心语音,非本族语语音教师应更具文化自信,并在多媒体语音技术支持下提高语音教学效果。 Most current pronunciation instruction research in China suggested the nativeness principle as the ultimate goal of pronunciation instruction. These studies emphasized the physical property of pronun- elation yet largely neglected the social dimension of pronunciation. By reviewing the controversial issues in pronunciation research including the intelligibility versus nativeness principle, the ownership of English, the social political nature of accent, English as an international language versus RP English and the legitimacy of non-native pronunciation instructors, the author argued from the sociopolitical perspective that the in- telligibility principle should replace the nativeness principle; pronunciation instruction should focus on those intelligibility aspects and non-native pronunciation instructors should be more confident in improving their teaching with the aid of technology.
