摘要
奥尼尔对东方传统文化的兴趣由来已久,尤其对古老中国的道家文化的迷恋伴随了他的一生,也深刻影响了他的戏剧风格和创作思想。老庄的道家思想体现在奥尼尔的多部戏剧作品中,以《马克百万》和《喷泉》为例,作者在这两部剧作中表达了道家阴阳周期、对立统一以及事物无限循环发展的思想。事实上,奥尼尔对中国道家文化的迷恋和向往,是在寻求一种精神信仰,旨在遥远的东方世界里找到一种哲理来医治现代西方物质主义的病根。
O'Neill had been long interested in the traditional Oriental culture.He was especially fond of the Chinese philosophic ideas of"Lao"and"Zhuang",which deeply influenced his dramatic ideas and writing style.We could find thoughts of"Taoism"in many of his works.Here the article is going to discuss about two of his early plays---Marco Millions andThe Fountain,where the author expressed the ideas of Taoism such as:the cycle of Yin and Yang,unity of opposites and development of things infinite loop.He was so keen on the Taoism with the purpose to try to look for some philosophy in the distant country to cure the materialism disease in the modern west.
