Most of us are aware that the place where an artwork originates has something to do with the distinctiveness of its appearance. But we rarely give the place itself prominence in our explanations of this phenomenon. Most academic disciplines which deal with art -whether archaeology, anthropology or art history -tend to see the object as embedded less in a place, more in a society. They thus explain the distinctive properties of objects in terms of specificities that are social and historical rather than geographical. However the local natural environment has exerted great influence on the formation of art, and the economic, social and historical context. This essay presents a fresh perspective of green art studies, emphasizing the importance of geographical environment to the local art properties while giving five cities as case studies thereof.
