In 1914, the first community foundation was established in the United States. In the past 100 years, the concept of community foundations was widely accepted by communities in different countries. Community foundations are rooted locally. They promote the development of local communities through creative grant-making, innovative philanthropic programs, and civic leadership. The authors discussed the concept, mission, and operation of community foundations in different countries and the implications for developing community foundations in China.
