Sport and postcolonialism share one vital theme in common the body. The body is central to the study of sports, and it has been far from marginal in postcolonial discourse and analysis. Physique was a particularly important theme in the European con- struction of the athleticism of various groups of people in the colonized world. Postcolonialism and Sport When? Postcolonial sport could be said to have arrived when the first "Third World" sports workers arrived in "First World Sport". As many interna- tional governing bodies of sport and the top performers are agents of global capitalism, we meet the challenge of understanding this role within the context of postcolonialism. Postcolonialism and Sport What? We suggest seven types of postcolonial sports or sportoid forms which include body--cultures that were "invented" by a former colony such as baseball and basketball in the USA. Sport and Postcolonialism How?. Postcolonial study of sports might include: the unveiling of the complicity of sport in the colonial domination; considering the possibility and potential of sport as a form of (neo-)colonial resistance and the recovery of the hidden spaces occupied, and invested with their own meaning, by the colonial and postcolonial body--cultural practices.
