Early in the end of 19th century, western scholars started to write the history of Chinese literature. In the beginning of 20th century, Lin Chuanjia and Huang Ren receptively composed a book both titled The history of Chinese literature, who have become the Chinese forerunners of the composition of the Chinese literary history. There have been so far hundreds of academic writings of the Chinese history of literature available. Such books written by Chinese scholars, in certain respects such as concepts, writing patterns and the classification of genres, are greatly influenced by Sinologists. However, with the changes of academic thinking and the progress of research recently, quite a few Chinese scholars' books have shown a tendency from "convergence" towards "divergence". The variance between the New History Chinese Literature and the Cambridge History of Chinese Literature fully embodies the different ways of writing the history of Chinese literature between east and west.
