Arthur Murphy's The Orphan of China was adapted in a historical period when the British national identity was being constructed. This article reveals the interaction of national, political, gender and aesthetic discourses by analyzing the play, some related paratexts and other historical texts intertextually. Simultaneously, it also explores the construction of freedom, democracy, equality and reason in British nationality in the play. In addition, this article shows that Murphy's construction of British national character in the play bears a mark of the image of China as "the Other" configured by his contemporary European Sinologists.
