“讹”之为“诱”,“化”之为“媒”——重读《林纾的翻译》

Distorting and Transforming the Original for Target Language Readers:A Reinterpretation of LIN Shu's Translations

学界对钱钟书先生《林纾的翻译》之关注,一直以来多围绕其"化境"一说展开,而对其从"囮"字中解出的"译、诱、媒、讹、化"之间的关系探讨尚未引起足够的重视。其实该文在提出"化境"的同时,也是在为林译小说中最具特色的"讹"、"化"而辩。译需求"化","化"则难免"讹","讹"与"化"又直达于"诱"和"媒"。译之"诱"、"媒"、"讹"与"化",体现了目的与手段的辩证关系。

LIN Shu＇ s Translations has been paid enough attention to in the academic field. The ＂sublimation theory＂ put forward in it has attracted considerable research interest, yet few researches deal with the relationship between ＂translation （yi）, enticement （ you）, matchmaking （ mei ）, distortion （ e ） and transmigration （hua） ＂, a set of interrelated meanings which QIAN Zhong-shu analyzed from a single Chinese character ＂e＇. Actually, the essay is also a defense of LIN Shu＇ s conscious ＂distortion＂ and ＂transmigration＂. ＂Transmigration＂ is the highest goal a translator pursues, and it is inseparable from creative ＂distortion＂. Both ＂transmigration＂ and ＂distortion＂ serve the purpose serve the purpose of ＂enticement＂ and ＂matchmaking＂. The relationship between ＂enticement, matchmaking, distortion and transmigration＂ can be understood as a dialectical interdependence between ends and means.
