In the second half of his history of Allied Architects, Huang Yuanzhao analyzes how the firm's development, expansion, and ultimate break-up expressed the shifting landscape of modern Chinese history. Allied Architects was founded in Shanghai, for example, and the firm quickly won projects in neighboring Suzhou, and then in Nanjing and Hangzhou. These projects exhibited the Chinese-Western style characteristic of Shanghai modern, especially during the thirties and early forties. During the war years, Allied Architects built primarily in Kunming, Yunnan and Guiyang, Guizhou. They also established a branch offi ce in Taipei. Consequently, with the establishment of the People's Republic of China, the founding members debated to stay in China or to leave? Ultimately, the three friends and classmates dissolved their partnership to begin again, each within a new historical context that would in turn shape their aesthetic and architectural practice.
