In her visit to western Sichuan, Jian Zhaoling followed winding trails in search of ancient strongholds. These mountain strongholds were presumably safe from human dangers, but not natural. Two mountain cities—Wenchuan and Ya'an—are also the names of China's most recent earthquake disaster areas. And yet. The strongholds above Wenchuan seem to offer sanctuary, refuge from the complications of urban life. Strong walls and locks, a clear line between the village inside the stronghold and the untamed world beyond. With each step deeper into the mountain, Jian Zhaoling ponders the enduring and dangerous beauty of Qiang Minority lifeways.
