This paper discusses the relationship of the concept and functions of information at different historical periods and the process of its evolution pointing out that it has undergone four evolutionary stages. The classical concept of information stresses the transmission function of knowledge. After World War Ⅱ, such stress has shifted to its retrieval function, In the 60s, emphasis has been given to its function of service, In the 70% the function of information analysis and research has received every emphasis.
