The move from black and to colour was not merely a technical advance, but also represented a revolution in filmconcept. Black and white, the colour medium used in early cinema, was fully worked in the creation of artistic tonal images in the films by such great film masters as Ingmar Bergman. Colour filmenabled directors to break from the stereotypes of black and white film. Antonioni's IL DESERTO ROSSO marked the beginning of a process whereby colour could transcend an object's physical appearance and become a major element of meaning in producing mood, expressing feelings and ideas, and transforming time and space.
