In light of Leibniz's theology, this paper aims to make an analysis on the theodicy, i.e.the justification of God a-gainst the evils and frustrations in the secular world, in William Golding's The Spire.Dean Jocelin, the representative of theo-logical truth, revolted against architectural law in the name of the glory of God.He insistsed that the spire be built without the cellarage.Mason, the master builder who stands for secular truth, failed to understand Jocelin's theological truth. He observed construction law while expecting architectural wonder. The controversy between construction law and God's glory ended with the fall of the spire. However, the power of the construction law failed to subvert Jocelin's faith of God's glory, but enabled Jocelin to see through the darkness in man's heart ( including his own darkness), thus reinforcing his belief in the omnipotence and justice of God.
