Why Was Wang Chonghui Appointed as the First Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republican China

中华民国南京临时政府成立伊始,临时大总统孙中山便着手内阁的选任,其提名王宠惠出任外交总长而让外交资历很深的伍廷芳任司法总长,颇受舆论争议,但孙执意让王出任外交总长,并在组织、舆论、心理上给予支持,最终得以如愿。究其原因,除王具备担任外长一职的素养外,还在于外交总长的选任实质是各派政治力量角逐的一个缩影,暗含着孙中山要将重要的外交权揽于自己掌控的意图。

At the beginning of the establishment of Nanjing provisional government of the Republic China, the provisional president Sun Yat-sen started to select members of the Cabinet. Sun nominated Wang Chonghui for the minister of foreign affairs and designated Wu Tingfang who had rich diplomatic experience as the minister of justice, which leaded to public controversy. However , Sun Yat-sen insisted Wang Chonghui hold the post of minister of foreign affairs and supported him in the organization, the public opinions and the mentality, finally he achieved his purpose. When we investigate reasons for his success, in addition to Wang Chonghui, s accomplishment serveing as a foreign minister,the essence of selecting the minister of foreign affairs was a miniature of political forces competing implying an intention that Sun Yat-sen just wanted to take the important diplomatic power into his hands.
