From the Chinese Space to Cultural "Bai sema" :Probings into the Architectural Thinking and Practice of LI Xiaodong

An architect excelled in both theory and design, LI Xiaodong has been highly consistent and coherent in his architectural thinking and practice. Building on systematic study and in-depth analysis of traditional ideas of the Chinese space, he constructed a series of modern Chinese cultural ＂Bai sema＂ whose identity is clearly distinguishable. By means of intensifying field interface, rendering pure single conception, maneuvering architectural scale, weakening material appearance and downplaying formal perception, he thus provided a reflexive sample for contemporary Chinese architectural practice.
