Lin'an(Hangzhou today), the capital of the Southern Song Dynasty, was very prosperous in commerce and far more developed than Chang'an(capital of the Tang Dynasty) and Dongjing(capital of the Northern Song Dynasty). It had significant and profound influence on the future developments of the cities in both China and the world. The degree to which the city's social life had become modernized made it'a representative example of the revolution of urbanization and commerce happened in China between the 9th and 13 th centuries.'The author tries to confirm the image further by describing the flower consumption and its supply for the market at Lin'an.
