The world is currently undergoing the largest wave of urban growth in history. In the future, most of the new growth will occur in smaller cities. Because these have fewer resources to respond to the change, they are at risk of being overwhelmed by these changes. The great challenge for the next few decades will be to avoid the mistakes of the past and exploit the possibilities that new urbanization offers for the future. Syracuse, New York is one of these small cities. The story of Syracuse＇s rise, decline,and its rise again is an instructive one. This article tells that story and provides insight into some of the strategies that were employed to revitalize Syracuse. Included at the end of the article are twelve recommendations that have applicability to any city. They are being offered in the hope that other cities will benefit from Syracuse＇s success.
