Although building construction history is a relatively new field of research, its significance has been catching increasing attention. Instead of purely concentrating either on aesthetic aspects of architecture as a history of styles, or on scientific dimensions as a history of technology, it gives a broader vision for decoding architectural culture and preserving heritage, through an understanding of its history and construction thoroughly. This paper looks at the building specification, building construction, construction process and building workers' organization by analyzing an architect's memoir of an English house in Hong Kong published in The Builder (1851), revealing an un-studied construction history behind the Western facade.
