The four American- born daughters in the novel Joy Luck Club struggle between traditional Chinese culture their mothers pass on to them and dominant White culture in which they grow up with and consequently, construct the self- contradictory ethnic and cultural identities. As they become more mature, these marginalized Chinese- Americans gradually find the way to integrate the Eastern and Western cultural element in themselves and reconstruct the ideal bicultural identity.
