The political and economic landscape in global petroleumrich regions underwent major adjustment and transformation inthe first half of 2014, as the geopolitical mix was reshaped by competing world powers and resource countries were troubled by political instability. Iraq was faced with a deteriorating security situation, raising the risk in petroleum cooperation in the Middle East to an unprecedented level; African countries endured political power transitions and intensified regional clashes; Ukraine fell into crisis affected by the complex triangle of relations between the US, the EU and Russia; Kazakhstan tightened oil and gas policies; Venezuela's political stability was unclear; and the US's 'Pivot to Asia' policy complicated geopolitics in Asia. China's oil and gas enterprises are exposed to an investment environment with higher risk, and adequate caution is needed so preventive measures are taken promptly and effectively.
