In November 2013 through March 2014, the water-retaining dam to the west of the western gate of Baoyou City of the Song Dynasty in Yangzhou was excavated, from which the bricks, tiles, ceramics, coins and lacquered wooden objects of the Song through Ming Dynasties were unearthed. The preliminary discoveries showed that the section of the moat of the ancient city on the Shu Ridge directly aligned with the ancient city's western gate became narrower than other places; the water-retaining dam began to be built in the late Southern Song Dynasty and played double role of flood-retaining and military defending outside the western gate of Baoyou City.
