The brain renin-angiotensin system (RAS) plays an essential role in the development of hypertension, mainly through the modulation of autonomic activity and vasopressin release. However, how the brain synthesizes angiotensin II has long been a matter of debate, largely due to the low renin activity in the central nervous system. This review describes recent findings on the role of the brain (pro)renin receptor, a newly discovered component of the RAS-in mediating angiotensin II formation and hypertension development.
