John H.van Vleck is the most famous American theoretical physicist,he made important contribution in the field of condensed matter physics.His put his all life in a wide range of scientific research work,including quantum theory,paramagnetic and diamagnetic theory,atomic spectroscopy,the crystal field theory and ferromagnetic resonance,and so on.John van vleck made important contribution to modern magnetism,so he known as the ＂father＂ of modern magnetism.In 1977,because of magnetic and disordered system electronic structure of the basic theory research,he won the Nobel Prize in physics with Anderson and Mott.The article introduces his life、the scientific research work and some little-known stories on training scientific talent.
