Hometown Man has been constantly interpreted by scholars on both sides of the Taiwan Straits after its publication and some interpretations have transcended the category of art itself, causing the distortion and misunderstanding. CHUNG Li-ho has a bumpy life, educated both with Chinese traditional culture and forced to accept many years of colonial education; He experiences differ- ent historical periods of China such as Japanese occupation of Taiwan, China's Mainland Anti-Japanese War, Taiwan's recovery. As a grown-up writer in a colonial environment, he knows the pain of the colonists and Hometown Man reveals the great psychological harm of cognitive violence from the perspective of culture, probing into the possibility and necessity of the awakening of ethnic conscious- ness of the colonists against the violent oppression.
