In Ming and early Qing Dynasties, farmers in areas along the Grand Canal were prohibited from irrigation with water from the Grand Canal, rivers or lakes to ensure canal transport, which brought serious influences to farmland irrigation and caused great losses in agricultural production. After the canal transport was ceased, rivers in the areas were silted up and dams were left in disrepair, which led to the deterioration of ecological environment in western Shandong Province.
