The Cultural Connotation of “压岁钱” and its Translation

发"压岁钱"是中国的传统文化习俗,来源于除夕夜驱邪求祥,驱赶名为"祟"的小妖,"岁"为"祟"的谐音。现有关于"压岁钱"的翻译或繁琐,或缺失,没有充分恰当地表达出"压岁钱"的内在含义。对"压岁钱"的翻译宜采用音译法,翻译成"yasuiqian",初期可添加解释以方便读者有效获取信息,在普及"yasuiqian"的同时传播中国传统文化。

＂压岁钱＂ is a Chinese traditional cuhural custom, a proper translation of which would be helpful for the transmission of Chinese traditional culture. In this paper, the connotation and origin of ＂压岁钱＂ are elaborated first, and then the popular translation versions of ＂压岁钱＂at present are analyzed. Besides, the existing problems of the current popular translated versions of this word are also pointed out. At last, the method of transliteration to translate ＂压岁钱＂ into ＂yasuiqian＂ is recommended.
