As an important image in Han Shan's poems, "inaction" reveals the quietness and calmness of his poems. The connotations of "inaction" have been changing along with the conception of "action". The "inaction" in Han Shan's poems is the combination of Buddhism and Taoism. On the one hand, the image of "inaction" in Han Shan's poems represents the insights into life and death, and thus means the peacefulness of minds. On the other hand, Han Shan emphasizes the meaning of mortal life, and bestows "inaction" with commitment to destiny. These two sides should be borne in mind when we try to understand Han Shan's poems.
