On John Chalmers' Interpretations of “Tao De Jing” through Cultural Perspectives

从文化层面来探析湛约翰对"道""德""阴/阳"之文化内涵的诠释,对其如何诠释及诠释的缘由进行分析,并得出结论:作为一名传教士的湛约翰翻译《道德经》的目的是传播基督教文化,即:言说"自我",但最终的结果是促进传教的同时、促进了中国文化的西传,即:言说了"他者"。

This paper studies John Chalmers＇ interpretations of such concepts as ＂Dao＂, ＂De＂ and ＂Yirr/Yang＂ in ＂Dao De Jin＂--a famous ancient Chinese classic. It is argued that his purpose of translation is to spread Christianity but while so doing he promoted the dissemination of Chinese culture to the west. That is, the ＂self＂ and the ＂others＂ were both revealed.
