It is hard to classify Günter Grass, who is probably the most important German author after the war, into any specific literary category due to his varied styles. He is enthusiastic about literary plays with intertextuality, which makes him a pioneer of postmodernism;his works are often grotesque, which makes him a successor of expressionists;he favours elements of fairy tales, just as romanticists do;however,he always cares about the reality. In order to shoulder his social responsibility as an author,Grass exposes the harsh reality and criticizes it with exaggeration, phantasy and literary plays.
