Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis(SHS)of Si 3N 4/SiC composite powder from silicon and carbon powder under low nitrogen pressure has been investigated,it is feasible to synthesize the composite powder in-situ under nitrogen pressure 0 5~0 6?MPa.Si 3N 4 as diluent in the starting composition promoted the coversion from silicon to Si 3N 4.The variation of product size and combustion temperature with the carbon content is also demonstrated.
