James Welch' s novel The Indian Lawyer fully represents the Native American protagonist Sylvester Yellow Calf's ethnic agency. Yellow Calf spares no effort in leaving the Blackfeet Reservation and becomes a successful lawyer with political ambitions, but a parolee's blackmail scheme leads him to a professional and identity crisis. His decision to withdraw from his political campaign and to work for the Reservation reflects an affirmation of his Blackfeet culture and a resolution of the ethnicity-basedchallenges the younger generation of Native Americans might encounter.
