Known as a utilitarian 'thinking machine',John Stuart Mill has attracted little interest from those concerned with the concept of literature and is even viewed as a dubious character in literary studies. The present paper, through a close reading of his essays 'Bentham ' and 'Coleridge ', attempts to demonstrate Mill's subtleties as a writer, his skillful use of imagery and his emphasis on 'feeling'.Moreover, this paper also tries to point out that the role which Mill adopts in those essays is quite in keeping with his understanding of the 'ideal poet',who,as is explained in his treaties on literature, should be able to 'summon up the state of feeling'in order to communicate with the audience and cultivate their character.
