Brief Accounts of Local Records Compilation by the Liu Family of Yizheng during Qing Dynasty

清代仪征刘氏一门三代皆致力于地方志的纂修,从清代道光、咸丰时期至民国年间,刘氏三代主持或参与纂修的地方志共有8种,这些方志资料丰富、体例严谨,被学者誉为名志。此外,在修志的过程中,仪征刘氏就方志纂修过程中资料的收集、体例的制定等提出了自己的看法,认为新志的纂修,不仅仅是在旧志体例基础上对原来材料的简单堆砌,而必须根据发展变化的实际,对以前所修各种旧志的体例进行比较分析,制定出合乎实际的新志体例。此外,刘氏还善于接受先进的方志纂修理论。

During the Qing Dynasty,the Liu family of Yizheng for three generations made efforts in local records compilation.From the Daoguang and Xianfeng period of Qing Dynasty to the Republican Period, three generations of the Liu family sponsored or got involved in the compilation of 8 local records. These local records are rich in reference materials, rigorous in styles, and are praised as famous local records by scholars. Moreover, in the course of local records compilation, the Liu family of Yizheng raised their views of reference materials collection and style setting during local records compilation. They took the view that the compilation of new local records is not merely a simple pileup of old reference materials on the basis of old local records styles. One must make comparative analysis of the styles of various old local records compiled in the past, and set up practical new local records styles according to the reality of development and changes. Apart from this,the Liu family was also very good at accepting more advanced local records compilation theories.
