Female artist is a recurring theme in Margaret Atwood's oeuvre. In her third novel Lady Oracle,Atwood uses Tennyson's poem The Lady of Shallot as a metaphor of female artist's tragedy to discuss woman's dilemma. It seems that none of woman artists can escape Shallot's curse. In fact, the tragedy of a female artist is an intrinsic role conflict as well as social pressure.Female artist is a special identity which breaks down the traditional relationship between the artist and the subject of art.The act of art forces women to split into two opposite parts, the subject and the object.Atwood suggests that the key to break Shallot's curse is the piece of artist work. The artist work is embodiment of both subject and object whereby female artists can realize the reunite of selves by artist expression. Therefore, the pattern of Atwood female artist novels is the protagonist get self-return via artist expression after long time of self-escaping.
