Misquoting Horace and Beyond

贺拉斯是古罗马著名翻译家、诗人和批评家。他在《诗艺》中有关fidus interpres(忠实的译者)的一句名言被翻译研究者广泛引用,版本各不相同,有时甚至大相径庭。为此,对这一问题进行追踪与探索,发现这句话被误译,背离作者原意,并在此基础上探讨语际翻译中的误读误译问题。

Horace, a prominent translator, poet and critic in ancient Rome, in his ＂Ars Poetica＂ made a comment about fidus interpres, which is so famous that it has been widely quoted by later translation researchers, but has had different, sometimes contradictory versions. The source of the comment on the one hand is traced and its original meaning and proper Chinese translation on the other is discussed. It turns out that Horace has long been misunderstood and misquoted, which is a typical instance of misinterpretation in interlingual translation.
