David Lodge is a renowned British novelist and literary critic. In his defense of modem novel and realism, he gradually established his systematic poetics of the novel. First, Lodge came to the defense of the identity of novelists, believing what Barthes held to be "the death of author" as something flawed in nature. Second, Lodge spoke in defense of the value and the function of novels, claiming that the humanistic value was embodied in the dialogic and democratic nature of the novel as a genre. Finally, Lodge justified the validity of time, history, language and imitation as found in the novel, believing that realistic novels can realistically and artistically represent human experience, both inside and outside, and that realistic novels are important form of art that can take into account the meaning of life and the value of human.
