Reflections on Modern Chinese and Western Cultures and Medicine

一个世纪以来,随着西学逐步进入中国,中医学与中国传统文化的命运几经波折,这不仅取决于一个国家的命运,更取决于中西文明自起源伊始的根本差异。现代,伴随着国力的增强,经济全球化的深入,国学在复兴的同时也面临着新一轮的挑战。对此,在传统文化方面,我们有必要秉持"先成人后成才"的教育理念,抓住核心经典,加强国学教育;在中医方面,我们则需要坚持中医学的本体论和特色思维方式,抓住其文化的核心价值。只有清醒地保持一份文化自觉,方能在多元的文化中更好地发展下去。

Since the introduction of Western medicine about a century ago the fate of Chinese culture and medicine has experienced ups and downs, which can not only be attributed to the ebb and flow of China＇s national power. One must trace the causes to the origins of Chinese and Western civilizations. In modern times, with the increase of national strength and the spread of economic globalization Chinese classics are gaining more and more appreciation while facing some new challenge at the same time. To meet the challenge we must hold on to the principle that traditional moral education precedes special training. That implies that we must focus on core texts and deepen the education of the classics. We should insist on the ontology and the special way of thinking of Chinese medicine and core values of Chinese culture. Only when we remain self-conscious of our own culture, can we have a better development in the multi-cultural environment.
