The ancient and modern processing methods, active ingredient research, and quality comparison before and after the processing of medicinal leech were reviewed in the paper. Combined with the results of anticoagulation test on Whitmania pigra Whit- man, the article drew a conclusion that different varieties of medicinal leech had different active ingredients of antieoagulation, Whitma- nia pigra Whitman had active ingredients of anticoagulation with promising heat stability, and the processing technology should be dealt with according to the clinic use.
