摘要
19世纪30年代后期,英国进入铁路时代,先后兴起三次修建铁路的高潮,但在此之前一些土地贵族出于各种原因抵制修建铁路。他们认为铁路不仅会干涉土地产权、破坏私有地产和庄园景观,还会对贵族经营的运河、公路事业带来冲击;部分土地贵族固守传统生活习惯,抵制铁路运输带来的快节奏生活。直到19世纪三十年代后期,这些贵族才积极投入到铁路时代的狂潮之中。
In the late 1830s, Britain stepped into the railway age. Three climaxes of railway building appeared successively. Prior to this time, however, some landed noblemen resisted railway building for a wide range o{ reasons. Viewing from their perspectives, the railway not only spoiled the manor, but also brought a massive shock to the enterprise of canal and turnpike. Some noblemen who adhered to traditional customs resisted the fast-paced lifestyle brought about by railway transi^ortation. It was not until the late 1830s that those noblemen plunged into the railway boom zealously.
