This paper aims at exploring the literary image of Caucasus in the series of works from Pushkin' s The Prisoner of the Caucasus to Vladimir Makanin' s The Prisoner from the Caucasus.Turning from a holy land of love and freedom to a place of reality and banality, and decayed into a battlefield in which bodies and spirits annihilate and a cage from which prisoners can never escape, Caucasus is still a "cultural tramp" that drifts away from the mainstream of the Russian society.
