On the contemporary stage, literary classics are either adapted to recapture their glory or deconstructed with the purpose of subversion ; however, Anna in the Tropics, the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, provides an alternative approach to present literary classics on the contemporary stage. With intertextuality as an effective writing strategy, Nilo Cruz integrates literary classics and his own play. He succeeds not only in arousing the literary memory of the audience, but also in showing his unique cultural spirit. This article analyzes the intertextnality from such aspects as textual construction, literary memory, and cultural reflection, with a purpose of shedding new light upon the contemporary stage.
