The Cultural Factors in Chinese Calligraphy Terminology Translation and Its Translating Strategies

书法术语是指在书法艺术中用来表示概念的称谓集合。自从书法文化开始对外传播以来,书法术语的翻译五花八门,各大权威词典也不尽相同,错译误译屡见不鲜。其中一个主要原因就是书法术语蕴含着丰富的文化内涵。通过分析书法术语翻译中的文化因素,总结出在跨文化语境下的书法术语翻译策略。

Chinese Calligraphy terminology refers to the vocabularies which are used to address the concepts in Chinese calligraphy art. Ever since the spread of Chinese calligraphy to foreign countries,the translation in this field has been in disorder and even authoritative dictionaries offer different versions of translation. Mistranslations are commonplace. A primary reason for this phenomenon is that these terms usually embody rich cultural connotations. Based on a detailed analysis on the cultural factors involved in translating calligraphy terms,the author concluded the translating strategies applicable to calligraphy terminology translation in the context of inter-cultural communication.
