The fat mass and obesity associated( FTO) gene is a newly described candidate gene associated with meat quality. FTO gene can be detected in multiple tissues of different animals. The polymorphism of FTO gene is significantly associated with meat quality traits, and it may affect the fat cell differentiation or its demethylase function, thereby affecting the fat deposition. Study on the effects of FTO gene on pork quality and its molecular mechanisms can provide newstrategies for improving the pork quality. This reviewdescribed the discovery and distribution of FTO gene, the relationship between FTO gene and meat quality traits and its possible mechanism in influencing pork quality.
