毛德西教授认为呼吸系统疾病多与外感六淫有关,内因则有痰湿、脾虚、肾虚、肺经气阴亏虚等。各种因素相互作用,影响肺脏宣发、肃降功能而发病;提出"急性期以祛邪为主,缓解期以补益为法"的独到见解,驱邪补益,根据肺失宣降程度,酌配升降药对及调理气机之品;毛师善用药对,如麻黄配橘红、麻黄配地龙、黄芩配百部、葶苈子配苏子等。
