Former Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili severed the diplomatic relations between Georgia and Russia due to the defeat of Russo-Georgia War and Russia's recognition of Abkhaz and South Ossetia as independent states. Confronted with a post-war domestic economy on the verge of collapse, Bidzina Ivanishvili took office as the prime minister of the Georgian government after winning the parliamentary election on October 1 st of 2012 and started to correct the pro-western diplomatic policy of the Saakashvili government. With positive cooperation between Russia and Georgia, both countries have gradually rebuilt their relations in economy, culture and humanities, with surging trade volumes. However, true normalization of Russia-Georgia relations remains to be seen as Russia insists on its position of recognizing Abkhaz and South Ossetia as independent states while Georgia intends to regain its lost territories.
